The Art of Restitution

How to deal with looted cultural assets poses a variety of tremendous problems. Nearly 70 years after the end of war and tyranny the monstrosity of mass robbery all over Europe is becoming increasingly apparent. A multitude of historical, legal, technical, psychological and ethical issues, the investigation of individual provenances, the search for the previous owners and the restitution of their looted goods challenge us strongly. This essay, based on practical experience and thorough reflection over a long period of time, indicates a variety ways and means for future endeavors towards the art of restitution.
