The repatriation of objects removed from colonised countries to European heritage institutions is a highly contested field. Based on the Namibian experience, this paper discusses some concrete cases and argues for ad-hoc solutions based on ethical considerations and practical cooperation between institutions, especially in provenance research, rather than reliance on legal arguments.
